Defeat The Mud - Turnout / Mud Fever Boots

The benefits of horse turnout boots

Turnout boots are becoming an increasingly popular way to protect horses legs during turnout. When a horse is left unsupervised in a field they can get up to all sorts of mischievous activities. Knocks and cuts are easily obtained, either by the horse catching themselves with their own legs or on other objects in the field such as fences and trees. We offer two different types of turnout boots, each will reduce the risk of your horse being injured at grass.

Our standard Turnout Boots feature a simple wrap-around design, making them easy to put on and take off. They are made from our specialist Air-Tech ventilated neoprene which is perforated to allow maximum airflow and help prevent heat build-up in your horses legs. The anatomical shape of the boot provides support to the major tendons and ligaments as well as ensuring comfort for the horse. The boots come down below the fetlock, covering the majority of the lower leg area and can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time. Standard Turnout Boots are ideal for those seeking a good level of protection and excellent support.

Our Turnout/Mud Fever Boots are specifically designed to provide protection from knocks and scrapes as well as mud fever…

What is mud fever?

Mud fever (pastern dermatitis) is a troublesome condition caused by a bacteria which thrives in wet and muddy conditions, which of course is frustrating for horse owners as fields often become wet and muddy. When a horses skin is damp, wet and muddy for long periods of time it can cause cracks in the surface, which the bacteria infects the lower leg area. In most cases scabs will form around the back of the pastern but in severe cases the whole of a horses lower leg can become infected. Treatment for mud fever involves keeping the horses skin clean and dry. The scabs also need to be softened and removed before washing the area in mild disinfectant, surgical scrub or other medicated shampoos. It is important to thoroughly dry the legs after washing. After the infection has completely cleared you may want to consider preventative measures and that is where our Turnout/Mud Fever Boots can come in handy.

The boots are designed to completely cover the horses lower leg, leaving the hoof alone exposed. This prevents mud from sitting on your horses legs and potentially fights off harmful bacteria. The boots are extremely flexible and therefore comfortable for the horse to wear for up to 12 hours at a time. They are made from a combination of Air-Tech ventilated neoprene and pique jersey, which makes them soft, highly breathable and they will also wick moisture away from your horses legs. Reinforced and strategically placed straps help keep the boots in place, no matter what you horse gets up to.
